In Japan there are many stores called "100-yen shops".
Almost all the products cost 100 yen.
They sell everything from plates and stationery to kitchen tools.
Because they are cheap and well stocked, they are popular with customers.
There are thousands of these shops across the country.
Today they are also spreading to countries around the world.
Walk down almost any shopping street in Japan and you will find a 100-yen shop: a store where nearly everything — plates, stationery, kitchen tools, cleaning goods — costs a single 100-yen coin. The four biggest chains, led by Daiso, run roughly eight thousand stores across the country, and the industry's combined sales are said to reach about one trillion yen a year.
The business began humbly, with traders loading goods onto trucks and selling them town to town at a flat price. The flat price survived because it solves a real problem: it removes every price decision from the shopper. The economics behind it are the interesting part. A single product may be manufactured in lots of hundreds of thousands of units, which pushes the cost per item far below what a normal retailer could reach. Low-margin products sit next to higher-margin ones, so the store earns its profit on the mix rather than on any single item.
The result is a shop where children spend pocket money, students furnish their first apartments, and foreign tourists fill baskets with souvenirs. The chains now operate in more than twenty-five countries and regions, quietly exporting a very Japanese idea of cheap, well-made everyday goods.

Daiso is by far the largest, with thousands of stores in Japan and a catalogue of more than 70,000 items, followed by Seria, Can Do and Watts. Together the four majors run about eight thousand stores nationwide, and Daiso alone has expanded to more than twenty-five countries and regions.

Because that is how Japanese children learn to read. Japan's Ministry of Education fixes exactly which character belongs to which grade — so "grade 3" is a boundary you can verify, not a feeling. Every article here is machine-checked: if a single character sits above its grade, it is not published.
The result: you never hit a character you have not learned. That is the whole reason this product exists.
