On September 2, a big boat festival took place at Kashima Jingu shrine in Ibaraki Prefecture.
It is a festival held only once every 12 years, in the Year of the Horse.
More than one hundred beautifully decorated boats went along rivers and lakes.
Drums and flutes sounded on the boats, and many people gathered on the banks.
The deity rides on a boat and travels to the neighboring prefecture.
